Scents Of The Season

There is an inevitability about the changing seasons, as the seasons change, so do the scents that surround us and we find ourselves gravitating towards smells and scents that remind us of the season or at least of happier brighter times like a holiday / vacation perhaps. I remember a time when during my travels during the summer months I would buy a scent that would remind me of my travels when I was back at home, I would even wear this scent when it wasn’t summer just to remind me of all the good times that I had during travelling. Now I am more particular about what scents I use and surround myself with, why? well because I have learned about the importance of what I put onto my skin and body. The skin is our largest organ and it goes without saying that anything we put on our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream.

This can get you thinking, well it does for me at least about what exactly it is that I am putting on my skin and in turn my body. I don’t want to absorb anything that might be harmful to me or my health in the long term. Let me explain… well commercial scents and perfumes are mostly made up of chemicals some of which we don’t even recognise their names or what they do to us health wise in the long term. These chemicals can be toxic to us if we keep exposing ourselves to them for long periods of time like when we spray that must have latest fragrance all over ourselves so that we can stay smelling nice all day or inhale the fumes from the seemingly safe scented candle or air freshener, they are also toxic to the environment. Now as I have a background in chemistry these are things that I am aware of and can no longer go back to not thinking of all the nasty and toxic chemicals in most commercial scented products.

To simplify things and yes it is helpful to get into the habit of looking at and researching what ingredients are in the products that we like to use, I like to take a different approach and focus on the good. In other words focus on more cleaner products so basically the simpler and more natural the ingredients the better it is, although I am aware there are some scent based ingredients that can be created in the lab that are non toxic ( more on this in another post ). So this season I’ll be focusing on incorporating natural scents that evoke cosiness and memories of happy times via essential oils and spices like cinnamon, cloves and the like. The candles I do burn are made from coconut wax which gives a good clean burn or else I use a scent diffuser with natural essential oils and with things like perfumes and perfume oils I stick to cleaner options from brands like Abel, Lina Hanson, Liha Beauty and Coqui coqui to name a few. What scents or fragrance do you like the most during this season? it could be as simple as the warming and cosy inducing scent wafting from the oven as you bake your seasonally spiced baked goodies.
